You cross off at least 27 Washington Redskins players off of the active roster for tonight’s preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Coach Mike Shanahan said he would rest his starters to avoid risking injury and to give him and his staff another opportunity evaluate bubble players.
In addition to the 22 starters, the coach gave some of the reserves the night off as well.
Players on the field doing conditioning drills because they aren’t playing for the Redskins tonight:
NT Chris Baker
DE Stephen Bowen
DE Adam Carriker
G Chris Chester
DT Barry Cofield
TE Fred Davis
LB London Fletcher
WR Pierre Garcon
CB Cedric Griffin
QB Robert Griffin III
QB Rex Grossman
CB DeAngelo Hall
S Tanard Jackson
DE Jarvis Jenkins
LB Ryan Kerrigan
G Kory Lichtensteiger
S Brandon Meriweather
C Will Montgomery
RB Alfred Morris
WR Santana Moss
LB Brian Orakpo
T Tyler Polumbus
LB Perry Riley
S Madieu Williams
T Trent Williams
RB Darrel Young
CB Josh Wilson
None of the starters are surprises, although it means that Young will enter the season without having played at all in the preseason. The list indicates that Baker, Jackson and Cedric Griffin are safe from Friday’s roster cuts.
Running back Roy Helu, who has been injured and hasn’t played this preseason, jumped in for a bit of the stretching portion of the drills, but then walked off to do work on his own when the players broke off for positional drills. No word on his status for tonight yet.
