Will Smith, suspended in bounty probe, starts for Saints

September 9, 2012

NEW ORLEANS—Will Smith was in the New Orleans Saints’ starting lineup at defensive end for Sunday’s season opener against the Washington Redskins.

The NFL reinstated Smith Friday after an appeals panel overturned the league’s four-game suspension of him in the Saints’ bounty case, although perhaps only temporarily.

The fans at the Superdome also gave Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma a huge ovation when he stepped on the field before the kickoff and waved to the crowd.

Vilma’s season-long suspension was overturned Friday. But he is suffering from a knee injury and was not in uniform Sunday.
