Starting left guard Kory Lichtensteiger and backup cornerback D.J. Johnson were observers as the Redskins began practice on Thursday. Lichtensteiger is nursing a sprained left ankle, and Johnson a sprained knee.

But backup quarterback Kirk Cousins returned to action a day after he missed Wednesday’s practice with the flu.

Linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and safety DeJon Gomes (knee) both appeared to be doing some limited work.

Full updates on their conditions will be provided by coach Mike Shanahan later this afternoon.

The team also signed safety Devin Holland to a futures contract, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The 6-foot, 205-pound Holland played four games for Tampa Bay in 2011. He doesn’t count on this year’s roster or practice squad. Holland played at McNeese State before entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent.
