The Redskins apparently remain in the mix to re-sign linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, but they will face significant competition from other teams once the NFL’s free agent signing period begins at 4 p.m.
Alexander was selected to the Pro Bowl on special teams this past season and is among the unrestricted free agents the Redskins would like to re-sign.
According to a person familiar with the situation, Alexander has drawn meaningful interest from other teams. Free agents were permitted to begin negotiating with other teams Saturday but cannot sign elsewhere until Tuesday afternoon. But the Redskins remain interested in re-signing Alexander, and according to the person with knowledge of the situation, Alexander has not ruled that out.
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday: “You always want to sign your players and Lorenzo has been a big part of this organization. I hope we can compete with people financially. But at the same time, you have to do what’s right for him and his family. But we’ll find out and see if we’re in the ballpark. And hopefully we are.”
