Round 3 roundup: Glennon is third QB chosen; Barkley and Nassib still available

April 26, 2013

The quarterback picks continue to trickle in, at a steady rate of one per round, in this NFL draft.

One quarterback, Mike Glennon of North Carolina State, was chosen in the third round. He was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 11th selection of the round.

That makes it three quarterbacks selected in three rounds of the draft. Florida State’s EJ Manuel was chosen in the opening round Thursday by the Buffalo Bills. West Virginia’s Geno Smith was selected by the New York Jets in the second round earlier Friday.

Southern California’s Matt Barkley and Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib have gone undrafted through three rounds.

Nassib, in particular, had appeared to have a chance to be taken far earlier in the draft. His college coach at Syracuse, Doug Marrone, was hired by the Bills, who had the eighth overall choice in the draft. Buffalo traded down eight spots, intensifying speculation that the Bills would take Nassib. Instead, they opted for Manuel.

This was not expected to be a quarterback-focused draft. But few observers, it seemed, anticipated that the quarterbacks would come off the board quite this slowly.

Another notable pick in the third round came when the Arizona Cardinals selected former Louisiana State cornerback Tyrann Mathieu with the seventh choice of the round.
