Redskins take RB Jawan Jamison out of Rutgers in seventh round

April 27, 2013

The Washington Redskins used their last pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by selecting Rutgers running back Jawan Jamison in the seventh round — the 228th overall.

A redshirt sophomore, the 5-foot-7, 203-pound Jamison rushed for 1,075 yards and four touchdowns on 255 carries (averaging 4.2 yards per carry). He also had 28 catches for 323 yards and two touchdowns for Rutgers.

Jamison had two years of eligibility remaining, but elected to forgo those two years and enter the NFL Draft so he could support his mother, Shanda Davis, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer, as well as his two sisters.

“She’s a trooper,” Jamison said of his mother, whom he reports is doing well now. “She’s always been there for me, as a single parent. … She was like my mother and father all in one and she did a tremendous job at it.”

Jamison played with a bone bruise in his right ankle late in his final season at Rutgers, but said that has completely healed now.

He hasn’t been told exactly how he will be used, but is expected to compete for playing time and special teams reps with backups Evan Royster, Roy Helu and fellow rookie Chris Thompson .

“I can pass-block, I can run, and I can catch out of the backfield as well. … I feel like I [pass-block] very well,” said Jamison, who played in a zone-blocking scheme at Rutgers. “I didn’t give up, not that I can recall, any sacks in pass protection this past season.”
