Griffin says he could see himself playing opener even after idle preseason

Quarterback Robert Griffin III says he could envision himself starting the Washington Redskins’ regular season opener in September even if he doesn’t play in any preseason games, if it comes to that.

“I’ve thought about that and yeah, I would be comfortable with that,” Griffin said after Thursday’s offseason practice at Redskins Park. “That’s all I can say. I have no control over whether I play in the preseason or not. I would be comfortable running out of the tunnel at FedEx Field with the smoke and everything.”

Griffin is working his way back from knee surgery in January. He is not participating in the offseason practices but was on the field during Thursday’s organized team activities, making throws as part of his rehabilitation.

He said he hopes to be ready for training camp, which begins July 25 in Richmond, and the Sept. 9 regular season opener at home against the Philadelphia Eagles in a Monday night game. But those are not certainties.

Coach Mike Shanahan said that Griffin at least would have to practice before playing in a game.

“You’d have to practice … not necessarily against an opponent. … He’d have to work with the first-team offense and he’d have to have some practice time,” Shanahan said Thursday.
