How Griffin deals with pressure

Numbers show that Robert Griffin III functions well when pass rushers such as Osi Umenyiora are chasing him. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

Nope, we’re not talking about the pressure of being a star. Pro Football Focus studied the NFC East quarterbacks and how they dealt with the pass rush against them. Although it might tell us what we already know about Robert Griffin III and his line — that the rookie quarterback was a magician in the pocket, and right tackle was a trouble area, it’s pretty interesting to examine the numbers.

Griffin dropped back 488 times last season, and dealt with pressure on 168 of those throws, most commonly coming from unblocked players, a player rushing against the right tackle, and multiple rushers. The PFF chart also shows that Griffin threw 17 touchdown passes and four interceptions while facing no pressure, and 5:2 when under pressure. It also shows that Griffin handled pressure up the middle nearly perfectly.

Here’s an excerpt of their analysis:

Though he faced only 14 pressures through center and right guard, he posted a near-perfect QB Rating and  a +5.4 PFF Grade. His most glaring weakness came through right tackle where, coincidentally, the Redskins’ biggest offensive line weakness also resided in Tyler Polumbus. Griffin faced 33 pressures through right tackle, compared to 41 from all other line positions, and posted a -2.0 grade and QB Rating of 28.5.

In a related but separate PFF post, Griffin ranked in the top five passing against pressure, behind Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Peyton Manning and Ryan Tannehill.
