RICHMOND – Wide receiver Donte Stallworth remains sidelined with a strained hamstring, but reports progress after rest and treatment. The 11th-year veteran, hoping to make Washington’s roster after signing with the team in the summer, still doesn’t know how much longer he will have to wait before returning to the field, however.
“It’s getting better every day. I don’t know a time table, really, but it’s feeling good. When I first did it, it just kind of tightened up on me a little bit. I’ve been working and everything. Hopefully sooner than later.”
Stallworth suffered the injury last Friday.
“I had a deep route and I tried to kick it into an extra gear and it tightened up a bit. They pulled me out and we’ve been working on it ever since,” he said.
The last two days, Stallworth has done some running while working with the trainers, but hasn’t taken part in walk-through or practice.
Stallworth finds himself at a crowded position. Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan and Santana Moss return as the starters and top slot receiver, respectively. Meanwhile, third-year players Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson look to establish them as consistent contributors on offense. The rest of the receiver ranks include Dez Briscoe, former Saint Devery Henderson, and undrafted free agents Lance Lewis, Skye Dawson, Chip Reeves and Nick Williams.
If the Redskins keep Garcon, Morgan, Moss, Robinson and Hankerson, who all contributed last season, that leaves only another spot or two up for grabs. Stallworth understands that he must exercise patience because a premature return will only lead to another setback. But he does feel the pressure of the situation.
“I know how [to be patient], but it’s the point of me actually doing it or not,” he said. “The trainers are doing a great job of watching me and giving me honest feedback, and I try to give them honest feedback. I want to be back out there as soon as possible, but we just want to be smart about it. Hopefully I can get back out there soon.”
