RICHMOND – As his activity has gradually increased through the first 10 practices of training camp, Robert Griffin III reports no setbacks and said that he feels mentally and physically on point. His exercise in patience continues, but the quarterback hopes to begin taking part in expanded team drills next week.
In order to ensure that he doesn’t rush back to full action too quickly, coaches initially limited Griffin to seven snaps in seven-on-seven action. Last week, his snap count increased to 17, plus those taken in individual drills. Griffin believes that he continues to prove everything necessary to move on to the next phase of his comeback.
“I just feel like I feel good now, I felt good a couple weeks ago, but I definitely feel better today,” he said. “Coach is really taking the reins on this one and holding me out of a lot of stuff. I’ve just got to – I’m doing everything they’re asking me to do right now. I feel like I’m in rhythm out there throwing the ball in the seven-on-seven reps I do get. But that’s all I can do, just prove to them and the players that I’m ready to play.”
Griffin agreed with Mike Shanahan’s assessment that his arm strength is “off the charts” and says that he focused on maintaining it during his rehab, partly because that, and mental sharpness, was all he could do.
Griffin has displayed great accuracy in practices, and rather than force throws when going against defensive backs, he has displayed good decision-making, working through progressions and finding holes in the coverage.
“I feel like I’ve been consistent with everything, getting to what the defense is giving me, whether it’s checkdown, touchdown throw, or anything in between, and that’s really making me focus,” Griffin said.
Coaches, trainers, reporters and fans alike have all closely watched Griffin as he has taken snaps, dropped back and stepped into throws. At one point last week, he didn’t appear as crisp in his footwork, or as strong in his plant before passes. But the day after that rainy day, Griffin looked on point once again.
The quarterback said that his confidence in the leg has never wavered, however. He said his impressive arm strength is a byproduct of good lower body mechanics. Griffin said those movements once again come as second nature.
“It’s nothing I’m thinking about,” he said. “I feel like it’s consistent. Everything from the timing to the mechanics of everything out there that the coaches are asking me to do, whether it’s a plant throw, hitch throw, short throw, deep throw, I feel like I’m in tune with all that, and the leg’s not an issue.”
