Shanahan sticking to plan regarding ramping up Robert Griffin III’s activities

RICHMOND – Despite Robert Griffin III’s insistence earlier on Monday that he is ready right now to progress from seven-on-seven to 11-on-11 action rather than wait until next week to do so, Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said he doesn’t plan on deviating from his game plan.

“We have a plan next week, and we’ll give him a little more next week and we’ll see how he does,” Shanahan said Monday after practice. “We’re going to do this day-by-day and gave him a little bit more freedom with each week that goes by, and hopefully, if there is no setback, he’ll be ready for the first game.”

Griffin on Monday said, “I’m ready to move on. You can only do so much in seven-on-seven. The completion percentage is there. I feel like the rhythm is there with the guys. We’re finding the holes in the defense when we have to, we’re throwing the checkdowns when we have to as well. So, coach will tell you something else, but I’m ready to move on. I’m ready to go to team reps and other things. So, I just have to keep doing what Coach asks me to do.”

Shanahan said he didn’t have any problem with Griffin’s growing impatience, but said that will not sway him.

“We do have a plan for him. He may not always like that plan, but that’s my job, sometimes not to be liked,” Shanahan said. “My job is to do the best thing for him. And that’s what I’ll do.”

Griffin received clearance from orthopedist James Andrews to return to full football action the week before training camp. But Shanahan waited until the following week to test Griffin again and give him his own stamp of approval to practice in a limited capacity.

Shanahan initially limited Griffin to seven seven-on-seven snaps a day, and last week increased that tally to 17 a day. He plans to give Griffin more freedom next week, if there are no setbacks between now and then.

“You always want your guys to be ready to go, and you want them to be a little bit antsy. But your job is to get them ready,” Shanahan said. “I don’t want to put him in too quick for the obvious reasons, but I like what I’ve seen. Like we talked about last week, he’s making a lot of progress and getting a lot of quality work done, and if he continues to do this, he’ll get a little more freedom, a little more reps, and hopefully be ready for the first game.”
