Kirk Cousins could play more than normal starting QB would in preseason

RICHMOND – Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan plans to play his starters around 10 to 15 plays in Thursday’s preseason opener against the hosting Tennessee Titans. But Shanahan expects a fluid situation regarding his handling of interim starting quarterback Kirk Cousins from the second preseason game on.

Generally, Shanahan would play his starting quarterback and the rest of the first team around 10 to 15 snaps in the first preseason game, close to a half in the second. The coach usually plays his starters into the third quarter.

With Robert Griffin III ruled out for the preseason, Shanahan said that Cousins could see more action, however, because he is working as the starting quarterback, but also is the second-string quarterback, and the more snaps he gets, the better.

“It is a unique situation with Kirk, but it’s unique throughout the whole preseason, like we talked about,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got a game plan, getting these guys ready. Kirk will play more in the second and third game than a normal starter would. We’re going to give him a lot of reps, not necessarily as much probably in this first game.”
