RICHMOND—Quarterback Robert Griffin III isn’t the only player increasing his practice participation this week at the Washington Redskins’ training camp. Safety Brandon Meriweather took, by unofficial count, every snap with the starting defense during Monday afternoon’s practice.
The Redskins had curtailed Meriweather’s practice workload earlier in camp as he returns from last season’s knee injury. Monday’s intensifying of Meriweather’s work was an encouraging sign for team officials who hope that his return will boost a pass defense that ranked 30th in the league last season.
Meriweather practiced alongside rookie Bacarri Rambo at safety with the starting defense.
“We gave him more reps today,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “I thought he looked good. He had one [pass] breakup today that I was impressed with down the field. So hopefully there’s no setback and he can keep on getting better.”
According to Shanahan, rookie safety Phillip Thomas is scheduled to have his injured left foot examined Tuesday by Robert Anderson, a Charlotte-based foot-and-ankle specialist.
“Hopefully there’s no setback there but we’d like a specialist to look at it just to make sure,” Shanahan said.
Thomas suffered the injury during Thursday’s preseason opener at Tennessee, which he started at safety alongside Rambo. Shanahan said Saturday that the Redskins were confident that Thomas had suffered no fractures or a Lisfranc injury, which is a potentially serious mid-foot injury.
Reserve linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy missed Monday’s practice with what Shanahan called a sore shoulder.
