RICHMOND – Although Mike Shanahan reiterated this week that he will not allow Robert Griffin III to play in the preseason, Griffin’s teammates say they don’t expect to encounter timing or chemistry issues at the start of the season if Griffin steps right in as the Week 1 starter as planned.
Griffin may want to get some snaps in before the regular season opener, but Shanahan has said that he believes the quarterback can sufficiently prepare with practice snaps, and offensive players agree.
During Griffin’s first 11-on-11 action, the Redskins operated in game-type conditions as he got the play from Kyle Shanahan, delivered the call in the huddle, came to the line and ran the plays. Afterwards, Redskins offensive players said that things played out with the same tempo and execution that the unit was used to with Kirk Cousins running the show.
Griffin’s top wide receivers Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan and Santana Moss all said because of the workload Griffin receives in seven-on-sevens, now in 11-on-11’s and also during reps he takes on the side, things should progress without a hitch once Griffin does return in a full capacity.
Moss said that it’s not entirely possible to predict, but that in the past, he has worked with quarterbacks even less during the preseason and still had success during the regular season.
“I played a season where I didn’t catch a ball from Mark Brunell all camp and somebody got hurt and he was in there Week 1, second quarter,” Moss recalled. “So, who knows? But, at the end of the day, as long as he’s in there getting in some kind of work, that’s what we can appreciate, and when it’s time for him to go full-go, we’ll be ready for him.”
Moss was referring to the 2005 season, when Brunell took over for Patrick Ramsey after he sprained his neck early in the season opener. Brunell wound up not relinquishing the starting job even after Ramsey’s neck healed.
Moss that season ended up putting up career numbers, with 1,483 yards and nine touchdowns, and the Redskins reached the playoffs.
