Cousins scheduled to have MRI exam Tuesday on injured right foot

Quarterback Kirk Cousins is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday but Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday night the Washington Redskins were hopeful that Cousins’s foot injury is not serious.

The Redskins were calling Cousins’s injury a mid-foot sprain of his right foot.

“They feel like it’s mild right now,” Shanahan said. “So that’s a good sign.”

The Redskins hope they don’t have a repeat of their experience from the preseason opener. Rookie safety Phillip Thomas was thought to have suffered a relatively mild mid-foot injury in that game. But after further testing, the Redskins announced that Thomas had suffered a Lisfranc injury, a significant mid-foot injury, and would miss his entire rookie season.

Shanahan said he raised the same issue with doctors Monday.

“I asked the same question,” Shanahan said. “I said, ‘Is that a possibility?’ because he felt that way last time. He said the X-rays were negative and it wound up being a Lisfranc. They don’t feel that way at this time.”

Cousins left the game in the second quarter.

“I felt it initially, and as I was walking back to the huddle, I started to self-evaluate about could I change directions if needed and be an athlete,” Cousins said after the game. “And I started feeling it and decided, ‘You know what? Preseason game number two with a long season ahead of us, now is not the time to try to be a hero.’ ”

Defensive tackle Barry Cofield suffered a fracture of a bone in his right hand, Shanahan said. Cofield will have to wear a cast but should be able to play with the injury, according to Shanahan.
