White doesn’t know yet how much he’ll play against Bills

Quarterback Pat White said Wednesday that he hadn’t been told yet by the team’s coaches how much playing time he will receive in the Washington Redskins’ preseason game Saturday against the Buffalo Bills at FedEx Field.

“I have not,” White said. “I just try to treat every play and every day like game day.”

With starter Robert Griffin III being withheld from the entire preseason and top backup Kirk Cousins likely to be sidelined this weekend by a sprained foot, it appears that Rex Grossman and White probably will split the snaps at quarterback relatively evenly against the Bills.

Coach Mike Shanahan suggested after Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the game in which Cousins was hurt, that it’s possible Grossman and White will play a half each Saturday. But Shanahan said then it was too soon to announce a playing-time plan for the Buffalo game.

White said he knows he will be evaluated on more than just his play in exhibition games as he attempts to secure a roster spot and return to the NFL after being out of the league the previous three seasons. The former second-round draft choice played a season for the Miami Dolphins in 2009.

“It’s more than game reps,” White said. “It’s practice reps. Every time I step on the field and I get under center, it’s me on film. So I’ve got to perform to the best of my ability.”

White said he thinks the offense has functioned relatively smoothly when he’s been on the field in the first two preseason games.  White has completed eight of 14 passes for 53 yards in the two games. He also has run for 57 yards on nine carries.

“I felt like we moved the ball well,” he said. “But I know I’ve got a lot of work to do. So I’m coming out today and I’m getting ready to go to work.”
