Coach Mike Shanahan said that quarterback Robert Griffin III has had two “excellent” days of practices since being allowed to work against the Washington Redskins’ starting defense.

“It has been a full practice for him,” Shanahan said Thursday. “We’ve had a chance to go against [the scout team]. We’ve had a chance to go against our defense. So he’s had two excellent days, same thing he would have during the regular season.”

Shanahan continues to say that he expects Griffin to start the season opener unless he suffers a setback in his return from January knee surgery.

“He was cleared [to practice] right from the beginning” of training camp, Shanahan said. “So there’s a difference from the first day to where he is right now. That’s one of the reasons why he’s going full speed in practice. We’re just hoping there is no setback because he’s getting some good work. We’re putting him in some situations that he’s going to get once [the season opener] comes, if there is no setback. So you want to put a guy through those type of practices as much as you can, but not throw him in there too early where there’s a setback.”
