“I think so,” Royster said. “I sure hope so.”
Royster missed Saturday’s preseason triumph over the Buffalo Bills at FedEx Field because of a sprained ankle. Roy Helu Jr. rushed for 70 yards in that game and appears to have all but locked up a roster spot with an impressive preseason. Keiland Williams seemed to improve his chances, running for 52 yards on eight carries against the Bills. Rookie Chris Thompson also is in the mix, with his prospects being improved by his ability to return punts.
“It’s just going to come down to whoever the coaches feel will get the job done,” Royster said. “I’m not rooting against them. [But] it’s a competition. We want to be on this team. If somebody else is doing good, you have to go out and do better.”
Royster had 328 rushing yards in six games as a rookie in 2011. He had only 88 rushing yards last season as Morris won the starting tailback job in training camp and set a single-season team rushing record as a rookie.
