After struggling with tackling in the open field in his first two preseason outings, Redskins rookie safety Bacarri Rambo showed improvement in his third game last Saturday.

Rambo recorded three tackles – all in the open field – and delivered another blow that separated Buffalo running back C.J. Spiller from the ball, preventing a completion.

“It felt real good, but I’ve got things I need to improve on,” Rambo said Monday. “I still have areas I need to get better at.”

Rambo said he has stayed after practice every day to work on his tackling with secondary coach Raheem Morris and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Rambo, who has taken every snap as the team’s first-team free safety since camp began, said their tutelage has helped him begin to understand how to take better angles when pursuing ball carriers. After hesitating as he approached runners in the first two games, Rambo attacked with aggression on Saturday.

“Just closing space. Trying to tackle in a phone booth, instead of a hallway,” Rambo said, describing his focus. “Just closing space and not allowing the ball carrier that much room to work.”

Coaches praise Rambo’s intelligence and his ability to learn quickly. Rambo said he still finds himself thinking at times, but he has noticed his comfort level improving. As a result, he feels he could play at a faster pace in last week’s game.

“I still have things I still kind of hesitate on, but I feel like I’m playing full speed and I’m not real hesitant in anything anymore,” Rambo said. “But I have to continue to get better, play the scheme and play assignment football, and go out there and play.”
