The Redskins have announced the signing of eight players to their practice squad a day after finalizing their 53-man roster.

All eight players had spent the preseason with Washington.

First-year cornerback Chase Minnifield, first-year defensive lineman Dominique Hamilton and first-year wide receiver Lance Lewis led the way. Running back Jawan Jamison, a seventh-round draft pick, and four undrafted rookies — wide receiver Nick Williams, tackle Xavier Nixon, guard Tevita Stevens and inside linebacker Will Compton — rounded out the practice squad.

Minnifield stands out as the most notable name on the list. His release on Saturday came as a surprise after he came back from a rookie season robbed by ACL surgery to have a strong start to training camp. Coaches spoke highly of Minnifield’s aggressive style of play, but ultimately he lost out for the fifth cornerback spot partly because third-year pro Jerome Murphy excelled more on special teams than Minnifield did, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Minnifield signed with Washington as an undrafted rookie in 2012. He had once been projected as a second-round-level talent, but knee surgery at the end of his final season at U-Va. caused teams to pass on him in the draft. Minnifield recovered in time to take part in Washington’s offseason practices, but he tore his ACL in the final session and missed all of his rookie season.

Hamilton spent a portion of last season on Washington’s practice squad. Lewis had been in camp with Washington last season, but suffered an injury and missed all of the year. He re-signed with the Redskins this past offseason.

As members of the practice squad, the players are permitted to practice with the team, but cannot dress for games or travel on the road. The Redskins could activate a player off of their practice squad at any time.
