Pat White calls making Redskins’ roster a ‘joy and pleasure’

Pat White wasn’t getting carried away Monday with making the Washington Redskins’ 53-man roster over the weekend as the team’s fourth quarterback.

“It was definitely a little nerve-wracking,” White said of the lead-up to Saturday’s cut-down. “But it’s a joy and pleasure to be part of this team.”

White last played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins in 2009, his rookie season after being a second-round draft pick out of West Virginia. But he said after the Redskins’ practice Monday that he wasn’t focusing on what he’d just accomplished.

“I know I’ve still got a lot of work to do,” he said. “So I’m just happy to have the opportunity to do it.”

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan declined to say how long he thinks the team can keep four quarterbacks on its roster.

“I said all along that we’re trying to keep the top 53 players,” Shanahan said. “I thought Pat was one of the top 53 players. I like what he’s done, especially being away from the game for a number of years. I thought he really handled himself well and we felt like he was one of our top 53, and that’s why he’s with us.”

Shanahan did acknowledge that he expects White to do an excellent practice-field imitation this week of Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick leading up to Monday night’s season opener against the Eagles.

“He’s gonna give us a great look,” Shanahan said. “He’s amazing at what he can do with the zone-read. He’s been out for a while and for him to execute like he did, as quick as he did, tells me a lot about Pat. But he’ll give us a great look this week.”
