Chris Chester: RGIII ‘good enough for us to win’

Redskins right guard Chris Chester said that although quarterback Robert Griffin III still is working his way back into form, the second-year pro still gives Washington the best chance to win games.

Griffin on Sunday threw for 300 yards for a third consecutive game, but also had an interception and a fumble – both of which proved costly. Griffin had a potentially game-winning touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson called back because the ball rolled around on the ground before Robinson secured it as he made a tumbling catch. Griffin scrambled a season-high six times for 37 yards and appeared more comfortable than he has in the first two games of the season.

Chester said although Griffin had some mental errors, he still has confidence in his quarterback.

“I still think there’s an area of adjustment, but I think that he’s good enough for us to win,” Chester said. “He’s definitely good enough for us to win. He’s going to get back into his role as our quarterback, but I’m confident in what he can do. I’ve seen some great things about him this season.”

Chester said the interception and fumble didn’t appear to rattle Griffin’s confidence.

“It seems like the regular Robert,” he said of Griffin’s body language in the huddle. “That’s the impression I get.”

The Redskins on Sunday scored their first first-half touchdown of the season – a 30-yard run by Alfred Morris – after getting outscored 50-0 in the first two games of the year.

Washington still lacked the same balance that the offense displayed last season. The Redskins dialed up 50 pass plays while running the ball just 22 times.

But Chester still saw positives in the showing against the Lions.

“It felt different for the most part. We still made more mistakes than we would’ve liked,” Chester said. “That’s disappointing, but I am encouraged how we kind of put some drives together. Ultimately, we shot ourselves in the foot a couple times, but we did actually put some drives together.”
