Fantasy football watch: C.J. Spiller is risky start this week

Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller was a consensus top five pick in fantasy drafts, yet here we are heading into Week 5 and he’s yet to score a touchdown and has one game with more than 77 yards rushing.

The good news is it’s difficult to imagine Spiller’s statistics worsening once he heals from a sprained ankle. The question is how long that process will take and if fantasy owners are willing to wait it out.

Thursday night is the right time to sit Spiller if you’ve been leaning that way, given not only his sore wheel but also the Cleveland Browns’ underrated rushing defense, which is yielding 75 yards per game, good for fourth in the league. With Fred Jackson also hurting, the Buffalo Bills appear headed to a committee situation that includes Tashard Choice.

Now to some questions from the Twitter-verse:

I say Smith based solely on matchup. Smith draws the Tennessee Titans, who are giving up the eighth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season and are ranked 10th in pass defense. Kaepernick, meantime, gets Houston, which has the top-ranked pass defense in the NFL.

I like Cutler over Wilson and Schaub this week, again based on matchup. Yes, Cutler was terrible against the Detroit Lions, but the New Orleans Saints are giving up the most fantasy points (25.4) to quarterbacks this season.
