ARLINGTON, Tex. – Special teams contributors Bryan Kehl and long-snapper Nick Sundberg both left Sunday night’s game with knee injuries, but immediately following the contest, neither knew the severity of their situations.
Both expected to receive additional tests and MRI exams on Monday. The players shared optimism that their injuries weren’t too serious, but admitted uncertainty.
Kehl, a backup inside linebacker and one of Washington’s top defenders on the special teams coverage units, said he injured his left knee while running down the field early in the second half.
“Something popped,” he said. “They don’t know what’s wrong with it yet. They really can’t tell with their tests. So I just have to get my MRI tomorrow and see exactly what it is. It’s something I have done a million times: just running down the field. I planted. It was weird.”
Kehl said that just standing on the leg, he didn’t feel any discomfort, but that when he tried to bend the knee, there still was some soreness. He also said there was some swelling in the knee.
Sundberg said he injured his right knee in the second half while making a tackle while on punt coverage.
“I hit him out of bounds, and I had a weird – I didn’t really feel anything – but I tried to get up, and couldn’t put any pressure on it,” Sundberg said. He added, “It was kind of one of those real awkward plays. I’ll have to get it evaluated tomorrow. … It’s all up in the air because I’ve never done this before.”
Meanwhile, rookie cornerback David Amerson left the game with a concussion in the second half and wasn’t available for comment as part of the league’s concussion monitoring program.
