The Washington Redskins are facing the prospect of being depleted at safety when they match up with quarterback Peyton Manning and the Broncos on Sunday in Denver.

The Redskins could be without both of their most recent starters at safety, Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty.

Meriweather was suspended for two games by the NFL on Monday, a day after he was penalized for two illegal hits on receivers during the Redskins’ triumph over the Chicago Bears. Meriweather could appeal the penalty.

Doughty suffered a concussion on an onside kick during the Chicago game and his playing status this week is unclear. He would have to be cleared by an independent neurologist to practice and play.

“We’re just gonna have to wait and see,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday. “There’s not a whole lot you can do about it except prepare the best way you can, and that’s what we’ll do.”

Rookie Bacarri Rambo began the season as a starter but has fallen out of the playing rotation. The Redskins started Rambo and E.J. Biggers, who’s normally a cornerback, at safety in their season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, with Meriweather hurt.

The Redskins have safeties Jose Gumbs and Trenton Robinson on the roster. They are permitted, according to the league, to sign a player to replace Meriweather during Meriweather’s suspension.
