Redskins safety Reed Doughty said that he has made some improvements since leaving Sunday’s game with a concussion, but that he remains uncertain about his prospects for playing this week against the Denver Broncos.
Doughty last week made his third straight start at strong safety, but he suffered a concussion while sustaining a helmet-to-helmet hit trying to recover an onsides kick by the Chicago Bears.
“I’m getting better,” Doughty said. “It’s just a day-to-day progress and we’ll just have to see how close I get by game day. Just hopefully, I don’t have any setbacks and be ready to go.”
Doughty didn’t say specifically what steps he had taken in the recovery process, but the fact that he was permitted to speak to reporters was a sign, according to league concussion monitoring protocol, that he had done some supervised running without complications.
A native of Greeley, Colo., Doughty — who played in college at Northern Colorado — will have family and friends in attendance for Sunday’s game. The sense of urgency because of the Redskins’ 2-4 record, plus his local ties serve as motivation for Doughty. But he said that he will not rush back to action.
“It’s still a possibility,” Doughty said. “It’s just one of those things that you just take the process one day at a time, and there’s a lot riding on this and for me, and you know, the fact that family and friends are going to come. But I’m just going to take it a day at a time, and do something that’s best for my body and best for this football team this week, and best for my future as well.”
Doughty had a concussion in 2009 and missed one game, but he said he didn’t remember how this concussion or symptoms compared to that head injury.
“Each injury is new and different,” he said. “It’s not an ankle sprain, so I’ll take it day-by-day and see how I feel. It’s a matter of knowing your body and knowing that Sunday is the time we’re looking at playing.”
