The NFL is investigating the allegation by Washington Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams that an official was verbally abusive toward him during Sunday’s loss at Philadelphia, calling him “disrespectful” and a string of profanities.
Williams’s accusation “is under review” by the league, according to Greg Aiello, the NFL’s senior vice president of communications. The league did not give a timetable for completing its review.
A resolution did not appear imminent Monday.
Williams said after Sunday’s game that the official called him a “garbage[-expeletive], disrespectful [expletive]” during the game. Williams said the official wore uniform No. 81. That number was worn by umpire Roy Ellison.
“If you rewind the play, you can see him walk by and say something,” Williams said Sunday. “You’ll see me turn around and say, ‘What was that?’ ”
William also said he “never disrespected him like he disrespected me.”
Guard Kory Lichtensteiger and quarterback Robert Griffin III also said Sunday they heard the official’s comment to Williams.
It is not known whether Ellison has given his account of the alleged incident to the league and, if so, what he has said about it. He was not available to comment. Walt Coleman, the referee in Sunday’s game, declined to comment to a pool reporter after the game.
“To me, this is a players’ league,” Williams said Sunday. “I just don’t think there’s no room for you to have to take that from the team and the refs. I think it’s very unprofessional. It [stinks]. I don’t know what else – I’m at a loss for words. You never expect that, as a player, going into the game to have to beef with the refs also.”
Update, 4:50 p.m.
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said he spoke to his players today about the alleged incident and expects to be in touch with the league in “the next day or two.”
Said Shanahan: “I feel very strongly about words that were used to our player because you have a number of players that said they heard it. So I’m disappointed in what happened. … It is quite unusual for somebody to use that type of language. … You just can’t use that type of language to get your point across.”
