Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett predicts that Washington Redskins outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan each will reach the 10-sack mark this season.

Asked by reporters Thursday what he sees as the reasons for Orakpo’s recent pass-rushing success, Haslett said, “Well, probably you guys badgering him the first couple games, saying he’s not getting any [sacks]. Now you can turn it and flip it on Ryan.

“But no, no, really, when you miss a year of football and you come back, it doesn’t just click in right away. It takes a little bit of time. He’s done a good job in both areas. The beginning of the year, he got chipped, hit and all that. He’s still getting that. But he has an understanding of how to beat all those things. Ryan obviously started off hot. But those things come in bunches. Those guys, both of them will end up with over 10 sacks.”

Kerrigan has 6.5 sacks in the Redskins’ 12 games, so he would need to finish the season with at least 3.5 sacks in the remaining four games to make Haslett’s prediction come true. He has gone five games without a sack.

Orakpo has 5.5 sacks in the last four games. He has 8.5 sacks on the season after missing all but two games last season because of a torn pectoral muscle.

“When you miss a whole year and then you come back, it’s all about timing and how to beat guys and all those situations,” Haslett said. “But I think he’s turned the corner. He’s not just doing a great job on the rush. Both those guys, him and Ryan, are awesome against tight ends. That’s why teams are having a hard time running on us. Those two are really handling the edges where you kind of limit where you can run the ball.”
