Following his 10th loss, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he took “full responsibility for this game today.” He said that he didn’t have his players prepared well enough to win the game. But a number of Shanahan’s players disagreed with that notion and said the blame fell on their shoulders.
“Coach is always going to say that to have our backs, but at the end of the day, guys have to look at themselves and be accountable,” linebacker Brian Orakpo said.
Wide receiver Santana Moss agreed.
“We didn’t play good enough. It ain’t about preparation,” Moss said. “Coach been doing one of the best jobs I’ve ever been around when it comes to coaches. He’s been taking a lot off us. This time of year, you don’t want to be pounding. He’s doing a lot. For him to say that, I appreciate that. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to go out there and play. It’s not about what coach has gone out there and done. He’s doing the right thing by his players. Any player that’s played in this league would want a coach like Coach Shanahan.
“So, at the end of the day, all the coaches to the side, because as players, we have to go out there and play, and for what went into this today, we didn’t play good enough,” Moss concluded. “We stunk as players. We have to take that to the chin and we have to accept that and know we can’t do that. We embarrassed ourselves. So at the end of the day, it’s not about coaches, it’s about us and how we want to be looked upon in this league, when it comes down to everything. Tonight, they can say whatever they want to say about us, because we stunk.”
Wide receiver Pierre Garcon and left guard Kory Lichtensteiger both said that the loss was a collective effort.
Uncertainty hovers over Shanahan, but Garcon said the Redskins can’t allow themselves to be concerned with that. As players, they must focus on their own jobs, he said.
“I’m not worried about anyone’s future here,” Garcon said. “My future is what I’m worried about because that’s all I can control. It doesn’t matter who I play for, I’m going to give 100 percent.”
