Following the hiring of Jay Gruden as head coach, people with knowledge of the situation said that McVay – previously Washington’s tight ends coach — would be promoted to offensive coordinator.
Gruden didn’t commit to that move when asked about it last week at his introductory press conference. He said only that he planned to talk to a number of coaches for the positions on his staff.
Five days later, the Redskins have finalized the 27-year-old McVay’s contract.
Redskins players last week praised McVay for his knowledge and communication skills. They expressed confidence in his ability to handle the job of offensive coordinator. People around the league view McVay, who worked with Gruden both for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the UFL’s Florida Tuskers, as a rising star in the coaching ranks.
The Redskins have yet to confirm the promotion.
Update, Weds., 10:35 a.m.:
The Redskins announced the promotion.
