Paul Guenther a candidate for Bengals, Vikings and Redskins staffs

Three NFL teams, apparently including the Washington Redskins, remained in the running as of late Wednesday morning for Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Paul Guenther, according to a person familiar with the situation.

That appeared to mean the Bengals, Redskins and Minnesota Vikings all were contenders for Guenther.

He potentially could be promoted to defensive coordinator in Cincinnati to replace Mike Zimmer, who was hired Wednesday as head coach of the Vikings. Others in the league seemed to regard that as the most likely outcome. One person familiar with the Bengals’ situation had said even before Zimmer’s hiring in Minnesota that he believed Guenther probably would remain in Cincinnati either way.

Guenther apparently could accompany Zimmer to Minnesota as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator. Or he could join Jay Gruden, the newly hired Redskins’ head coach who was previously the offensive coordinator of the Bengals, in Washington. The Redskins apparently want Guenther to work with current defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, not replace him, although a shuffling of job titles would be possible. The Redskins also seemingly remain intent on retaining secondary coach Raheem Morris.

The Redskins announced Wednesday they’d hired Brian Baker as their outside linebackers coach. He’d held the same position with the Cleveland Browns. Baker has 18 years of NFL coaching experience and is a former player and graduate assistant at the University of Maryland.
