Paul Guenther to become Bengals defensive coordinator

The Washington Redskins failed in their bid to add Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Paul Guenther to their defensive coaching staff.

Guenther will remain with the Bengals and will be promoted to defensive coordinator, two people familiar with the situation said.

He replaces Mike Zimmer, who was hired earlier Tuesday as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Redskins and Vikings pursued Guenther, according to people with knowledge of the deliberations. The Redskins apparently wanted Guenther to work with current defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, not replace him, although a shuffling of job titles seemed possible.

The Redskins appear to remain intent on retaining Haslett and secondary coach Raheem Morris on Coach Jay Gruden’s staff.

Gruden was the offensive coordinator of the Bengals before being hired last week by the Redskins and worked with Guenther in Cincinnati.
