NFL Draft: RB Lache Seastrunk taken by Redskins in sixth round

The Redskins selected Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk in the sixth round of the NFL draft (186th overall).

The 5-foot-9, 201-pound Seastrunk could fill the Redskins’ need for a change-of-pace back. He clocked a 4.46-second 40-yard dash, and last season averaged 7.4 yards per carry while gaining 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns on 158 carries.

Seastrunk — whose first name is pronounced “Lake” — doesn’t have much of a track record as a pass-catcher, however. Seastrunk recorded only nine catches in 2012, and had no catches in 2013.

But Seastrunk insists that he can help the Redskins in that third-down back capacity.

“I really feel like I can catch the ball very, very well,” Seastrunk said. “I feel like I proved that at the combine and at my pro day. I just feel like given the opportunity and being utilized, I will do everything in my power to make us a better organization.”

Seastrunk expressed excitement about being reunited with former Baylor teammate Robert Griffin III.

“I just achieved my life-long goal in life, and I get to play with one of my former teammates, so it’s a blessing,” he said.

Seastrunk joins a crowded, but unsettled backfield. Alfred Morris is the undisputed workhorse back. But the role of Morris’ sidekick remains up for grabs. Fourth-year players Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster (drafted in the fourth and sixth rounds of 2011, respectively) and Chris Thompson (a fifth-rounder in 2013) will contend along with Seastrunk for those duties.
