Mark Maske’s NFC draft grades

Here are Mark Maske’s draft grades, which ran in Sunday’s print editions, for the 16 NFC teams. The AFC grades are in a separate post.

NFC EAST

WASHINGTON REDSKINS: Passed on Cyrus Kouandjio in the second round, reportedly with concerns over knee issues, to trade down for Trent Murphy, who’s stuck for now behind Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan. Can a 3-13 team without a first-round pick (still thanks to the high price of the Robert Griffin III trade) afford such a luxury? They got potential starting offensive linemen in Morgan Moses and Spencer Long in the third round. Grade: C+

Rd. Pos. Player College
2 (47th pick)  OLB  Trent Murphy  Stanford
 3 (66)  T  Morgan Moses  Virginia
 3 (78)  G  Spencer Long  Nebraska
4 (102)  CB  Bashaud Breeland  Clemson
5 (142)  WR  Ryan Grant  Tulane
6 (186)  RB  Lache Seastrunk  Baylor
7 (217)  TE  Ted Bolser  Indiana
 7 (228)  K  Zach Hocker  Arkansas

DALLAS COWBOYS: They showed restraint by passing on quarterback Johnny Manziel but, with Tony Romo now 34, will they eventually regret that? They addressed big needs on their offensive line with Zack Martin and in their pass rush with Demarcus Lawrence. Grade: B-

NEW YORK GIANTS: The Giants made a bold first-round pick by going with wideout Odell Beckham Jr. but didn’t come away with a top tackle. They did add to the interior of the offensive line with Weston Richburg and fortified the defensive line with Jay Bromley. Grade: B-

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: It’s debatable whether Marcus Smith was worth the 26th overall pick. The Eagles added a pair of early-round wide receivers in Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff but didn’t seem to get a wideout dynamic enough to offset the loss of DeSean Jackson. Grade: C-

NFC NORTH

CHICAGO BEARS: All of Chicago’s picks the first two days were used on defense. Kyle Fuller is a solid prospect at cornerback and was worth the 14th overall choice. Grade: C

DETROIT LIONS: Eric Ebron was well worth the 10th overall pick and gives Detroit a tight end who creates significant matchup problems for an opposing defense. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy and center Travis Swanson also should be solid contributors. Grade: B

GREEN BAY PACKERS: They had four picks in the first three rounds and did relatively well with them. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was on the heels of Calvin Pryor as the draft’s best safety and should help immediately on defense. Grade: B-

MINNESOTA VIKINGS: Anthony Barr is a solid addition to the defense, but Minnesota probably didn’t need to use the ninth overall selection to get him. The Vikings needed a quarterback and redeemed themselves by trading back up into the first round to get Teddy Bridgewater 32nd overall, three years after taking Christian Ponder 12th. Grade: B+

NFC SOUTH

ATLANTA FALCONS: They upgraded significantly on the offensive and defensive lines. They made the right move sixth overall to get Jake Matthews and got lucky that Ra’Shede Hageman dropped to them in the second round. Grade: B+

CAROLINA PANTHERS: It’s difficult to argue too much with what Carolina did. The Panthers needed wide receiver help and got Kelvin Benjamin in the opening round. Defensive end Kony Ealy was well worth a late second-rounder. The only quibble is that perhaps they should have addressed their offensive line issues before the third round. Grade: B

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: Trading up to get Brandin Cooks in the first round was a superb move. Working with Drew Brees in that offense, he should have an impact. Stanley Jean-Baptiste, a converted wide receiver, is an intriguing prospect at cornerback and has the potential to develop into a major asset. Grade: B+

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: Tampa Bay passed early on a chance to improve its quarterback situation but managed to get the draft’s second-best wideout, Mike Evans, and second-best tight end, Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Grade: B

NFC WEST

ARIZONA CARDINALS: Arizona traded down and made a curious choice in Deone Bucannon. He’s well-regarded as a safety prospect but it was not widely believed that he would go in the first round. Logan Thomas is an interesting prospect for a fourth-round quarterback. Grade: C-

ST. LOUIS RAMS: Tackle Greg Robinson became the eighth — and potentially best — player taken by the Rams with the picks from the Robert Griffin III trade. Fellow first-rounder Aaron Donald should anchor the defensive line, and Lamarcus Joyner and Tre Mason could be immediate contributors. The Rams had the picks to have an excellent draft and didn’t waste them. Grade: A-

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: It might have been a bit of a reach to take Jimmie Ward in the first round, but he could help. Running back Carlos Hyde, center Marcus Martin and linebacker Chris Borland also could fill roles quickly. Grade: B-

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: The champs traded out of the first round and probably didn’t get a lot of immediate contributors. But that’s the luxury of being the Super Bowl champions: You don’t need a lot of immediate contributors. Grade: C-
