Redskins’ offseason schedule, between now and the opener

Since readers have requested it, and since Washington has certain kinds of practices that are allowed before training camp gets underway in late July, here’s a list of what’s ahead, starting with tomorrow’s opening of rookie camp.

May 16-18: Rookie camp
Washington’s newly drafted players, undrafted free agent signees and various tryout-level players will be on hand Friday through Sunday for an introduction to NFL life. The camp is open to reporters and photographers on Saturday, and coverage all offseason will spike on the days the media is invited to Ashburn.

Some second-year players occasionally attend rookie camp, as Mark Maske explained last year. Here’s our coverage from last year’s rookie camp, in case you’re curious what to expect.

May 27-29: Organized team activities
These practices, known as OTAs, are non-contact practices involving the entire team. Reporters can attend May 29. This particular stretch is Tuesday through Thursday. Here’s our OTA coverage from last season.

If you’re interested in the gritty details of what’s permitted in OTAs, the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is online. Try Article 21, pages 131-137.

June 2-4: Organized team activities
Monday through Wednesday, with reporters invited on Wednesday.

June 9-12: Organized team activities
Monday through Thursday, with reporters invited on Wednesday.

June 17-19: Veteran minicamp
These practices, running Tuesday through Thursday and open to reporters each day, aren’t much different than OTAs. They’re mandatory, non-contact and limited to 3 1/2 hours total per day. More detail on page 138-139 of the CBA.

Here’s our minicamp coverage from last season. ESPN has a list of dates for these camps for the other 31 teams.

Beginning approx. July 24: Training camp
The training camp dates haven’t been officially announced, but 15 days before the first preseason game would be July 23. That’s a Wednesday, and last year’s camp began on a Thursday. So the 24th is my best guess.

Preseason opener: Aug. 7
The New England Patriots come to FedEx Field, the first of four preseason games in three weeks. Training camp will probably wrap up shortly after this game and sometime before Game 2, also at home, against the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 18.

Season opener: Sept. 7
In Houston. Against No. 1 overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney. The debut of DeSean Jackson in burgundy and gold. Away we go.
