Redskins to host free agent outside linebacker Quentin Groves

Veteran outside linebacker Quentin Groves will pay the Redskins a visit on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

A sixth-year pro out of Auburn, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Groves spent last season with the Cleveland Browns, but appeared in only five games because of an ankle injury. The 29-year-old served as special-teams captain for the Browns prior to his injury.

For his career, Groves has recorded 157 tackles and 8.5 sacks while serving primarily as a backup (he has 29 starts in 84 games) and special-teams standout during stints with Cleveland, Arizona, Oakland and Jacksonville.

The Redskins would like to improve both their depth at outside linebacker and on special teams.

The team has Pro Bowl pass-rushers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan locked in as starters, with rookie Trent Murphy expected to have a significant role in a number of packages. Sixth-year veteran Rob Jackson and second-year pro Brandon Jenkins both are vying for a role behind that trio. Jackson has proved to be a serviceable backup to Orakpo, and started much of the 2012 season when Orakpo missed all but two games with injury. Jenkins, however, struggled both on special teams and on defense in practices and struggled to get onto the field last season, dressing for only five games and recording just one tackle.

Groves, whom Cleveland released last week, visited the New England Patriots’ facility on Wednesday.
