Chris Thompson plans to return to practice on Wednesday

Sidelined 12 days because of an ankle sprain, second-year running back Chris Thompson said he plans to return to practice Wednesday.

“I mean, I’m feeling a whole lot better,” Thompson said. “I just have to go out and practice today and tomorrow and see.”

After playing in the preseason opener against the New England Patriots, Thompson, who likely will be limited in practice on Wednesday, sat out Monday’s 24-23 victory over the Cleveland Browns. He hopes to play in Saturday’s road game against the Baltimore Ravens.

During training camp, Coach Jay Gruden expressed frustration about young players, Thompson was among them, who sat out long stretches because of injury. Vying to be the third-down back when camp began, Thompson has fallen way behind in that race. And with several young running backs competing for roster spots, Thompson acknowledged he is concerned about his situation.

“Of course, I am, to be honest with you,” Thompson said. “I want to be out there. I just know that physically, I can’t right now. Everything else is just pretty much out of my control. All I can do is take it day by day and hope that I’ve shown the coaches enough that they feel comfortable in being patient with me … until I finally get this ankle right.”
