Jay Gruden will not play his starters in the preseason finale in Tampa on Thursday.

The first-year head coach had debated giving his offensive starters a limited amount of snaps Thursday night after seeing them struggle in their first three preseason games.

On Monday, Gruden said there was roughly a 10-percent chance that his starters would see action Thursday, but that he was leaning toward not playing them.

After Tuesday’s practice – the final full session before Thursday’s game – Gruden announced that the starters would not play.

“It’s my intent now after a couple of good days of practice to let the other guys play – let the backups play, so we can solidify those roles. Very important. I think we have our starters. In general, we feel pretty good about who they are and now we need to find the key backups, and who they are and make sure they get the ample reps to make the football team and show what they can do on the field.”
