There are a growing number of worthwhile storytelling nights around
Storyteller Kaitlin Jentzen co-hosts the Tongue Party. (Alexander Morozov)town thanks to SpeakeasyDC, Story League, the Anecdote and Fan-Freaking-Tastic. And that means there are plenty of opportunities to both listen to a compelling tale and give voice to your own. But if the mere thought of taking the stage under a bright spotlight prompts sweaty palms and heart palpitations, you might consider checking out the Tongue Party. The new series hosted by storytellers Joseph Price and Kaitlin Jentzen kicks off tonight at the Dunes and offers the chance to share stories in a no-pressure setting. Upon arrival, visitors will receive a prompt related to the theme of the night (“an education”), after which it’s time to start meeting people and sharing your freshly concocted tale.
DJ Lil’e will provide background music, complete with chimes indicating when it’s okay to leave one conversation and start another. Think of it as storytelling speed dating with a dash of Meetup. Better yet, the guest list is full of locals experienced with the art form, who would no doubt be happy to help out if a case of speaker’s block hits.
For even more inspiration, veteran storytellers John Kevin Boggs and Mary-Alice Farina will take the stage later in the evening to show how it’s done. The event is free; the suggested $20 donation benefits Horton’s Kids, dedicated to tutoring and mentoring D.C. youth.
