At Hirshhorn, see 'Bill Cunningham New York,' win a Schwinn

Fashion photographer Bill Cunningham is the subject of a new documentary. (AFI Silverdocs)

“The best fashion show is definitely on the street. Always has been and always will be.” Those are the words of New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, whose “On the Streetphoto essays treat the sidewalks of New York like the runways of Paris and Milan.

In “Bill Cunningham New York,” a new documentary portrait by filmmaker Richard Press, the camera turns on Cunningham, an unassuming octogenarian who, despite his clout within New York society, travels the city by bicycle and sleeps on a cot in a spartan studio jammed with filing cabinets.

The film appeared at the AFI Silverdocs festival last summer and hits select theaters March 16, but there's a special advance screening at the Hirshhorn, March 10 at 8 p.m. Admission is free, but you'll want to show up plenty early to grab a seat.

Speaking of free, in honor of Cunningham's preferred mode of transportation -- a bicycle -- you can win a Schwinn three-speed:

RT this & follow both @RideSchwinn & @hirshhorn for your chance to win a Schwinn Coffee or Cream 3-spd http://ow.ly/41wHSless than a minute ago via HootSuite

The contest is open until March 8, so if you want a new set of wheels, get tweeting.
