Blossom Kite Festival, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and more things to do in D.C. this weekend

To help you plan your next few days, the Going Out Gurus selected our favorite things to do in Washington this weekend. Some of our favorites include the Blossom Kite Festival, a new production of “The Taming of the Shrew” and orchestra just for kids. Read about some highlights here, and then check out the full list.

The Blossom Kite Festival is one of the few National Cherry Blossom Festival events that encourages you to direct your gaze away from the trees and up to the sky. You can watch kite demonstrations, fly your own or build a kite at an activity station.

Synetic Theater’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” will certainly offer a fresh take. Here’s what we know: Like the seven Shakespeare plays staged before, it will be wordless; and shrew Katherina (Irina Tsikurishvili) is seen in the promotional materials riding on the back of a motorcycle driven by Petruchio (Ryan Sellers).

Members of the Kennedy String Quartet perform for kids to explore how composers such as Haydn, Beethoven and Mendelssohn use musical opposites in their work, explaining to kids why fast rhythms or slow melodies elicit certain emotions. An instrument petting zoo will be held beginning an hour before each show.

These are just a few of our ideas. See a dozen more on our list of the best events this weekend.
