On April 16, 1862 -- almost nine months before the famous Emancipation Proclamation went into effect -- Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act.

This year, Washington celebrates the 150th anniversary of Emancipation Day on April 16, with a parade, fireworks and a city-wide scavenger hunt. The day before, Lincoln Cottage is the site of a special program of speakers and music.
