Chuck Brown tributes on the horizon

The death of Chuck Brown led to a number of spontaneous tributes to the Godfather of Go-Go on Wednesday night. Crowds gathered outside the Howard Theatre to sing and celebrate his music. DJs all over the city snuck a few of his songs into their sets. The Passenger renamed all of its cocktails in his honor and spun Brown’s albums all night.

There are more tributes to Chuck Brown on the horizon, beginning this weekend. We’ll be sure to add more as we get them, but here’s what’s happening now:

The biggest event on the horizon will be at the National Capital Barbecue Battle on June 23. Brown was booked to headline the Saturday night concert, as he has for many years, alongside Trouble Funk and Be’la Donna and Sugar Bear of E.U. Instead, his band will perform as the Chuck Brown Tribute Band, as they did at the Harlem Renaissance Festival in Landover earlier this month.

On Saturday night, DJ Biz Markie will perform a tribute to Chuck Brown as part of the weekly Tuscana Saturdays party at Tuscana Lounge. As always, there’s an open bar from 11 to midnight and free hors d’oeuvres until 12:30. E-mail TLFRASIER@aol.com to get on the guest list for free admission before midnight.

Meanwhile, at the Velvet Lounge, DJ Doc Delay will be spinning a tribute to both Chuck Brown and the Beastie Boys, who recently lost founding member MCA (Adam Yauch) to cancer. (It’s an appropriate coupling for a DJ who’s from D.C. and often works in New York City.) Doors open at 9 p.m.
