On Sunday, the seventh annual DC Yoga Week kicks off, which means big savings on classes at a slew of area studios. For regulars, that also means a New Year’s resolution-caliber influx of newbies in already cramped quarters. But since yoga is all about breathing your way beyond such distractions, you might think of Yoga Week as the most productive time of the year.
The deals at the many participating studios include free and $5 heated classes at Bikram Dupont, a free family session at Allay Yoga in Kensington, and free and $5 classes in Chevy Chase at Circle Yoga.
With Yoga Week also comes the yearly al fresco practice of Yoga on the Mall. It’s quite a spectacle (as you can see, above), as hundreds of Lululemon-clad Gumby-people do downward dog in the sun. Less flexible beginners and more affordable workout gear are also welcome. The free event, on May 19, takes place near the Sylvan Theatre and starts at 1:30 with a kid-friendly class, followed by an acro-yoga demonstration. And at 3 p.m. it’s time to roll out the mats for a 90-minute multi-level class.
