Dupont High Heel Race turns 25

Gentlemen: Start your Louboutins!

The 25th annual Dupont High Heel Race is on Tuesday, which means scores of costumed men in high heels will jog down 17th Street NW, cheered on by thousands of screaming specators ready to get into the spirit of Halloween.

If you want to give your costume a dry run before this weekend’s parties, the drag race is the perfect venue to do so. Crowds begin to form in the late afternoon, so don’t expect to have a front-row view of the jaunt if you try walking up an hour before the race, which departs from 17th and Church streets at 9 p.m. If you want to take part in the race yourself, make sure your heels are at least two inches tall and sign up at Cobalt beginning at 6 p.m.

Here's video of the 2008 race and photos from 2009; while some of the topical costumes have surely changed since then (though Sarah Palin promises to be well represented, as ever), the event’s spirit will never go out of style.

If you’re heading out for the race tomorrow, tweet your photos to us @goingoutguide or use the hashtag #highheelrace and we’ll compile the best crowd shots in a blog post Wednesday morning.
