The most crowded Earth Day event will no doubt be on the Mall, when musical performers — including Cheap Trick, Dave Mason and Kicking Daisies — and speakers take the stage from noon to 7 p.m.
There will also be live music at the Earth Day Festival in College Park, which lasts all weekend and promises bands, movie screenings and speakers. Those that like to get their hands dirty can sign up for the volunteer project, which includes a stream clean-up and kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The Clean Water Network is inviting people to ride the waves on Sunday with the first annual Float-In behind Nats Stadium. Those that don’t have their own kayak or canoe can take advantage of river tours along the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. A talk by Ralph Nader and a screening of the documentary “Last Call to the Oasis” are also on the agenda.
Another outdoor option is the annual Party for the Planet at the National Zoo. There will be recycling-centric games, an orchestra of gourd instruments and craft activities where kids can turn newspapers into pots for planting, not to mention something to check off your to-do list: You can bring along your old cell phone for recycling.
The more artistically-inclined have a few options. ArtDC in Hyattsville is hosting an Earth Day Exhibit of nature-inspired work through Saturday. Or get a glimpse of the promising pop-up Water Street Project during Sunday’s free Eco Art + Design Depot, featuring green vendors, workshops and demonstrations. A craft fair is also on tap at the Brookside Gardens celebration. Other draws include wildlflower and plant walks and a free movie screening.
Prefer to eat your way through Earth Day? Head to Poste for Oysterstock. The $75 all-you-can-eat (and drink) event includes a feast of clams and oysters, local wine and beer and live music. Proceeds go to the Oyster Recovery Program. The Mansion on O Street will also be donating funds on Earth Day. A portion of profits from Sunday breakfast, brunch and tea will go to the American Forest Foundation.
