Firefly to close in September for renovation

Dupont Circle’s Firefly is getting ready for a September shutdown during which the quaint and romantic restaurant located in the Hotel Madera will undergo a full dining room renovation. The restaurant will close from September 10-29.

Local firmGrizForm Design Architects is behind the makeover, which will see the kitchen’s exhibition window transformed to depict the exterior of a cottage, and the dining area as something of a wooded picnic space anchored by the restaurant’s striking indoor tree trunk.

The biggest changes will take place at Firefly’s bar, which will grow by 10 seats. An enhanced bar also means an enhanced bar experience, and the Firefly team — after consultation with the omnipresent Gina Chersevani — has updated its beverage operation and is looking for a full-time mixologist to oversee the revamped program. “Right now we kind of all pitch in and we do a lot of stuff that’s sort of kitchen inspired,” head chef Daniel Bortnick said of the hiring quest. “But I would really like to have someone who does this for a living out there really doing it right.”

Bortnick is using the downtime to build a new bar-only menu. The restaurant expects everything to be in place when they reopen at the end of September.
