Get ready for Capital Pride parties with a special playlist from the Mixtape DJs

The Capital Pride Festival takes over Pennsylvania Avenue NW on Sunday afternoon, but there’s plenty to do before that. (2011 photo by Linda Davidson/ The Washington Post)
The Capital Pride festival is in full swing, though it hits its peak this weekend with the annual parade through Dupont Circle on Saturday and then the big festival on Pennsylvania Avenue on Sunday. Of course, there are plenty of other events going on, including female jello wrestling at Phase 1, a parade viewing party with all-you-can-eat pizza at Pizzeria Paradiso and the return of Bob Mould and Richard Morel’s Blowoff dance party at the 9:30 Club. (We’ve also made a list of our Best Bets for Capital Pride.)

To get in the mood for Pride, we asked DJs Shea Van Horn and Matt Bailer of the long-running Mixtape party to make us a Spotify playlist. Mixtape is taking over the Black Cat’s main floor on Saturday. With the hard-rocking Gay/Bash night on the club’s back stage on the same night, “the whole venue will be turning it out for Pride,” Van Horn says. “However, we’d like to remind folks that Mixtape is always a mixed party that is about the music and dancing, whether gay, straight, bi, or whatever.”

Doors open at 9:30, and music fans will want to make a point to stop by early: Tunes spun during the first hour tend to be more adventurous and alternative than the dance floor-filling anthems that are played later on.
