Getting Up Guide: Dine out for life tonight

A quick glance at Thursday’s what-and-where:

“Bill Cunningham New York”

In "Bill Cunningham New York," a new documentary portrait by filmmaker Richard Press, the camera turns on the unassuming octogenarian who, despite his clout within New York society, travels the city by bicycle and sleeps on a cot in a spartan studio jammed with filing cabinets. The film appeared at the AFI Silverdocs festival last summer and hits select theaters March 16, but there's a special advance screening at the Hirshhorn tonight at 8 p.m. Admission is free, but you'll want to show up plenty early to grab a seat.

Dine Out for Life

Food and charity go hand in hand in th is town, and Dining Out for Life is no exception. Enjoy a meal at one of more than 100 participating eateries on Thursday and the restaurateurs will donate a portion of proceeds to Food & Friends, a Washington nonprofit group that provides meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other diseases. Annie's Paramount SteakhousePosto and Ristorante Tosca are donating 100 percent of the night's proceeds, while Bistrot du CoinCafe LunaMehak, Arlington's Santa Fe Cafe and Skewers are each chipping in a healthy 50 percent. Here's a a full list of participating restaurants.

Wordless Music with Tyondai Braxton

Experimentation is in Tyondai Braxton's blood. The son of avant-garde composer Anthony Braxton has spent the last 15 years producing consistently innovative material that draws on rock, electronic and classical to create new strains of progressive music. For this special 8 p.m. performance at the Library of Congress, he teams with the Wordless Music Orchestra, a New York group also known for genre-bending, forward-thinking material.

Alex Baldinger is editor of the Going Out Guide blog, which covers food, drink, arts, music, events and other curiosities in the D.C. area. He is forever in search of a great sandwich.
