Good bagels in D.C.? Yes, believe it or not.

Believe it or not, there are some great bagels right here in the D.C. area. (Bill O'Leary)
Producing a list of the best places to find a decent bagel in the D.C. area is sort of like releasing a copy of your long-form birth certificate: If people don’t want to believe something, they won’t, no matter the evidence to the contrary.

So here’s a fact: There are some tasty bagels right here in the nation’s capital. You can either make the best of what we’ve got, or continue to stomp your feet and argue that the only bagels worth eating, anywhere, come from some idealized hole-in-the-wall in New York.

“Hands down: NO ONE! #dcisnotNYCandneverwillbe,” one of our Twitter followers snarked after we asked who offered the best bagels in town (Feel free to keep the responses coming, by the way).

Not all the bagels in the area are winners, for sure. Some are too yeasty or too moist; others aren’t moist enough. Some are just lopsided wheels of bread, which is a far cry from a real bagel. We’ve seen them and tasted them just like you have.

But if you know where to look, you’ll find the bagels you’re looking for: Crunchy on the outside, just chewy enough on the inside, and with a flavor that combines sweet and savory in just the right way.

You can choose to believe it or not, but here’s the list: best bagels in the D.C. area.
